TOP QUESTIONS WE HEAR FROM PATIENTS
1. What does it take to run Hemo SCAN S?

The Hemo SCAN®-S Test Kit is a rapid, quantitative lateral flow immunoassay kit to be used in conjunction with the Hemo SCAN®-S Reader System for monitoring and guiding blood transfusion therapy in Sickle Cell Disease patients.

One Hemo SCAN®-S Test Kit contains:

  • Hemo SCAN®-S Test cartridges

  • Capillary Sampler

  • PreTreatment Modules (containing buffer)

  • Package Insert

Materials not provided but required:

  • Lancet

  • Alcohol wipes

  • Gloves

  • Timer

2. What do the results tell me?

A total of 2 detection lines are possible: the control line indicates the sample has flowed through the test strip, and the intensity of the S indicates the level of hemoglobin S in the blood sample. The Hemo SCAN®-S Reader will interprete the intensity of the S line.

3. What are the alternatives?
Central lab tests are typically used to monitor the hemoglobin S levels in sickle cell patients. Common methods include:
  • HPLC
  • Hemoglobin electrophoresis
  • Blood smear

4. How quickly can Hemo SCAN S yield results?

After the specimen and buffer mixture has been correctly dispensed into the Hemo SCAN®-S cartridge, allow the test to run for 15 minutes.

5. How accurate is Hemo SCAN S?
Hemo SCAN®-S results were evaluated by comparison with HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography). Results are shown below. Figure 1 compares the estimated percentage of HbS using Hemo SCAN®-S test line response versus the exact value measured by HPLC. Figure 2 visualizes the agreement between the exact HbS percentage and the HbS percentage calculated using Hemo SCAN®-S.

Results from the clinical evaluation report show that over 97% of the sample results fall within the agreement bounds of -8.7% HbS and 9.9% HbS.
