IMPORTANT SAFETY INFO

TEST PRINCIPLE

The Hemo SCAN®-S Test Kit is a rapid, quantitative lateral flow immunoassay kit to be used in conjunction with the Hemo SCAN®-S Reader System for monitoring and guiding blood transfusion therapy in Sickle Cell Disease patients. A small amount of blood, five microliters, is taken by fingerprick or venipuncture using the provided Capillary Sampler. The Sampler is placed into the buffer loaded PreTreatment Module to release hemoglobin by lysing erthyrocytes.  Five drops of the treated sample are dropped from the PreTreatment Module and added to the sample inlet of the Hemo SCAN®-S Test cartridge.  The treated sample flows through the test cartridge for 15 minutes before the result is read.  The sample will interact with antibody-conjugated colorimetric detector nanoparticles and travel to the capture zone.  A HbS detection line will have increased intensity in the presence of higher quantities of HbS, with the control (Ctrl) line appearing when sample has been flowed through the cartridge.  The Hemo SCAN®-S Reader System measures and reports the quantity of HbS as a percentage.

           THE NEED

90% of Sickle Cell patients receive at least one blood transfusion in their lifetime. These blood transfusions not only help to maintain proper hemoglobin levels, but also to prevent stroke, one of the most common complications of the disease. However, excessive transfusion also carries risks. The monitoring of HbS (Hemoglobin S) concentration is key when considering transfusion or transfusion therapy adjustment for a Sickle Cell patient. Currently, the only methods to measure HbS are lab tests which could take 2-3 days to yield results, during that time, the physician could only rely on symptoms alone to make a judgement. As a point-of-care diagnostic test, Hemo SCAN®-S produces accurate results in 15 minutes, allowing timely, reliable clinical decisions.

          WHAT IS HEMO SCAN®- S?

The Hemo SCAN®-S Test is a lateral flow chromatographic quantitative immunoassay to aid in the monitoring and guidance of blood transfusion therapy in Sickle Cell Disease patients using fingerstick or venipuncture whole blood samples. The Hemo SCAN®-S Test is designed for use in the Hemo SCAN®-S Reader System.

          RAPID, SIMPLE, PAINLESS

We understand sickle cell patients' need for frequent hemoglobin S testing, that's why the Hemo SCAN®-S is designed to be as painless and simple as possible. The test takes only 15 minutes, and one drop of finger/heel stick blood to run.
